Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Elliot Moka.

Level 3 Geography deepens comprehension of the interactions between people and the environment. Throughout this course, students analyse responses to migration caused by climate change, focussing on Kiribati as well as global perspectives. Also. the course investigates tourism development in Rotorua, offering an exploration of this process and its impacts on people and the environment. There is a field trip to Rotorua planned in order to do geographic research in the city.

Pre-requisites: Minimum of 8 credits in Level 2 Geography, or with HOD approval.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Students will learn to:
explain the background to Polyfest and its importance as a significant event
identify reasons for Polyfest being held
identify the key groups and their responsibilities
explain the different aspects that go into planning an event
outline and describe all environmental and social impacts relating to the event.

Term 2
Students will learn to:
describe global spatial patterns
explain the process of climate change
outline the issue of climate migration
describe the global spatial pattern of climate migration
explain differing perspectives on climate migration in New Zealand and Kiribati
evaluate the social and economic impacts of climate migration for New Zealand.

Term 3
Students will learn to:
explain how the tourism development process operates in Rotorua
explain how key elements in the tourism development interact
conduct geographic research on changes in the tourism industry since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Term 4
Students will learn to:
explain how the tourism development process creates spatial variations in Rotorua
explain how the tourism development process creates temporal variations in Rotorua
explain how the tourism development process has impact on people and the environment.
