Subject Description

Geography is the study of people, place, and environment. It looks at how people interact with the environment and the consequences of human actions for the economy and sustainability. In this course, students will learn how volcanic activity has shaped our local environment and later urban planning. There is also a focus on natural hazards and their effect on people and the environment. Students will also learn about how the environment affects where people choose to live and the patterns created in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Students will learn to:
explain what Geography is about and why we should study it
describe different types of geographic features
describe spatial patterns seen in the world
investigate the global pattern of where people live
explain the reasons for global population distribution
describe the impacts of settlement on people and the environment.


Term 2
Students will learn to:
describe changes in Onehunga over time
evaluate future urbanisation trends
investigate the usage and sustainability of the Onehunga Bay reserve
conduct geographic research process in a local environment.

Term 3
Students will learn to:
describe the Earth’s structure
explain the nature of plate tectonics
explain volcanic processes and the environments created by them
analyse the impacts of natural hazards on the environment
analyse the impact of climate change on coastlines.


Term 4
Students will learn to:
identify different types of geographic issues
analyse different types of perspectives of people and groups
examine decision-making processes and evaluate responses
examine climate change effects in Kiribati and Aotearoa New Zealand.
