L1 History
Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: Elianna Gabriel, Elliot Moka.
Whatever you feel about history, there’s no denying that it’s being made all the time. We are all currently making history, every moment... It may not feel like it at present, but as John W. Gardener said, “History never looks like history when you are living through it.”
So why is history important? There are many reasons, such as learning from the past, and about other cultures, including our own. Learning about history also helps us to develop other skills, such as decision-making, reading, writing, and researching.
Studying History provides students with a sound basis for further education as well a variety of careers. The skills developed during this course of study are well regarded and extremely relevant to the world we live in. History is highly recommended for Law, Journalism and Politics.
As well as fascinating topics, you will learn the skills to communicate ideas more clearly, learn how to effectively research and, importantly in today’s world, learn how to analyse information for authenticity so as to avoid misinformation and/or disinformation. Students will investigate the advancement of Human Rights internationally, and engage with human stories and experiences of the past. Areas of focus will be the Civil Rights Movement in the USA and New Zealand.
