L1 Product Design
Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: David Eastwood.
In L1 Product Design, students design and develop products in response to a design brief that addresses a particular need or opportunity. The course focuses on two areas.
Design Process: Students learn the methods and principles of design (sketching, prototyping, design communication) to generate a concepts that is ready for manufacture.
Manufacture: Students learn basic procedures using resistant materials to make a practical project. The course covers the safe use of machines and tools. Projects could include using Steel, Wood, Plastics, and such processes as 3D printing, casting, laminating, computer controlled machining.
Pre-requisites: None
Materials Fee: $40
Subject Overview
Term 1
Select different materials to use in initial material explorations.
Identify how the exploration/experiments informed an understanding of the properties of materials.
Term 2
Apply the knowledge gained from material explorations to guide the deliberate selection of materials to use for the creation of a purposeful outcome.
Use practical skills to develop and create a purposeful outcome using the selected materials
Term 3
Use stakeholder feedback to inform decisions about modifications to a Product Design problem.
Reflect on how successfully manipulation, transformation, or combination of different materials has been used to determine the properties and characteristics in the development of the outcome.
Evaluate how well the final outcome has met the need or opportunity.
Term 4
Evaluate, research and critique
