L3 Business

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Mei Ng.

Students will explore global businesses and understand how they interact with each other. Students will also learn how to write a marketing plan for a new or existing business. There may be opportunity for students to plan and run a real business through the Young Enterprise Programme, visit local businesses and hear inspirational stories from guest speakers. Innovation, exporting and change management are just some of the concepts that will be studied at a strategic level. Students are expected to work in groups to complete the business activity.

 Pre-requisites: 12 credits in L2BUS or 12 credits in L1 English, L2 Social Sciences course, or with LOLA approval.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Develop a comprehensive marketing plan .
• describe the difference between vision and mission statement
• identify marketing objective
• carry out market audit – explaining SWOT analysis, other tools such as Ansoff, Boston matrices, Porters five forces and PESTEL analysis
• create marketing strategy using SMART goals,
• explain and evaluate forecasting and contingency plans.
• Write a thorough marketing plan, including reference s to marketing budget and detailed action plan for implementation and future monitoring
• Concurrently, preparing the Business Plan

Term 2
Write a thorough business plan
• describe a business activity
• describe and explain how the business is Innovative
• describe and explain how the business is Sustainable
• Describe and explain the consultation with specialist advisors in relation to innovative, sustainable and ethical aspects of the business activity.
• Evaluate involves measuring the performance of the business activity in relation to desired economic, social, cultural (including ethical), and environmental outcomes; integrating a Māori business concept(s) where relevant to the business activity to fully support explanations.

Term 3
• explain comprehensively the business concepts being
studied, such as:-
- quality management
– location issues
- supply chain issue
- capital investment decision
- unexpected risks of expanding globally.
• Apply and integrate relevant evidence from the given context to fully support explanations
• integrate business knowledge relevant to the complex problem(s) to fully support explanations
• integrate a Māori business concept(s) where relevant to the complex problem(s) to fully support explanations.

Revision for NCEA exams

Recommended Prior Learning

7 credits in L2BUS or 7 credits in L1ENG or 7 credits in a L2 Social Sciences course, or with HOD approval.
