Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: Alex Eastwood.
- The Level 3 Physical Education course focuses on evaluating, analysing, and demonstrating performance in physical activities using biophysical principles and socio-cultural factors.
- Students critically assess performance improvement programmes, to improve individual performance in training for a 6km Tough Guy and Gal mud run.
- The course also involves analysing physical skills, breaking them down into components, and applying biomechanical principles to provide feedback for improvement.
- Practical performance is applied in both Badminton and the 6km Tough Guy and Gal mud run, ensuring proficiency in a wide range of skills.
- Students devise strategies to achieve physical activity outcomes and examine contemporary leadership principles in physical activity contexts.
Pre requisites: 11 credits in Level 2 Physical Education (including AS 91328 & AS 91334), or with HOD approval
Approximate credits: 19 credits

Term 1
Evaluate the effectiveness of a performance improvement programme
- examining a performance improvement programme by using biophysical principles and socio-cultural factors to make judgements about the effectiveness of the programme.
- evaluation of a performance improvement programme is to improve the student’s own performance in badminton.
- Students will be explaining the effectiveness of using biophysical principles, such as functional anatomy, biomechanical principles, skill learning, and sport psychology, as well as socio-cultural factors, including societal, political, economic, environmental, ethical, cultural, and historical aspects, in their training programmes.
Analyse a physical skill performed by self or others
- breaking the performance of the physical skill down into component parts.
- explaining the parts using biomechanical principles.
- using the performance analysis and biomechanical principles to provide feedback and/or feed-forward with the intent of improving their performance of the skill.

Term 2
Demonstrate quality performance of a physical activity in an applied setting
- Students will participate in badminton and the Tough Guy and Gal 6km mud run.
- In badminton, this includes technical accuracy, control, and strategic decision-making, while the mud run demands endurance, agility, and overcoming obstacles.
Devise strategies for a physical activity outcome
- selecting and explaining the knowledge that underpins specific strategies to achieve when training for Tough Guy and Gal.
- this involves developing the strategies, trialling them and adjusting them as a result of a process of ongoing reflection.

· Biophysical - which may include – anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, psychology, skill acquisition, methods/principles of training.
· Socio-cultural - which may include – societal, political, economical, environmental, ethical, cultural, historical factors.
Term 3
Examine contemporary leadership principles applied in physical activity contexts
- researching and explaining contemporary leadership principles, and how these are applied, to draw conclusions about their relevance and suitability for physical activity contexts.
- Contemporary leadership principles include collaborative leadership, distributed leadership, provision for individual voice and empowerment.
Recommended Prior Learning
Students are recommended to have prior learning in both Level 1 and Level 2 Physical Education.
