Physical Education

Why study Physical Education?

Physical Education plays a crucial role in the curriculum because it teaches students overall development by equipping them with essential skills, knowledge, and competencies necessary for leading healthy and physically active lives. Through structured physical activities and educational curriculum, students are encouraged to explore various forms of movement, fostering an understanding that movement is not just a means of exercise but also a fundamental aspect of human expression.

Physical Education also teaches students important life lessons. Students learn to work together as a team, how to be fair and respectful to others, and how to develop resiliency when the going gets tough. These are skills that they can use not only in sports but also in school, at work, and in their home life.

Learning about the world around them is another fundamental part of Physical Education. Students learn about different sports and games from different cultures, or they might talk about why some people have better access to sports and exercise than others. This helps them understand how society works and how they can make things better for everyone.

By imparting invaluable life skills, fostering a love for movement, and promoting critical engagement with societal issues, Physical Education empowers students to lead fulfilling, healthy, and active lives, both within and beyond the school environment.

Why study Health?

At Onehunga High School, health education is about much more than just staying physically fit. It is a holistic approach that covers mental, emotional, social, and even spiritual wellbeing. Students dive into topics like mental health, substance use, relationships, and sexuality, while also exploring how different cultures view and value health. Students are encouraged to think critically about these issues and challenge any stereotypes they encounter. The curriculum also teaches practical strategies like resilience and coping mechanisms to help students deal with life's challenges. But it's not just about personal wellbeing; there's a big focus on social justice too. Students learn how to apply what they've learned to make positive changes in their own lives and their communities. Understanding health in all its dimensions is super important because it helps students navigate the complexities of life and become active, empowered members of society.
