10 Physical Education

Subject Description

  • The Year 10 Physical Education programme helps students improve their skills and techniques in netball, volleyball, and athletics through drills and games. 
  • Students learn about the skeleton, basic bones, and joints, including how they work and move. They also study muscles and how they work in pairs to create movement, and they explore how exercise affects the body both in the short term and long term. 
  • The programme covers key concepts in sports science, such as projectile motion, force summation, balance, stability, and Newton's laws, and applies these ideas to sports. 
  • Students learn about social responsibility, teamwork, and the impact of attitudes and values on safety and wellbeing. They practice and improve basic motor skills, understand the difference between risks and hazards, and develop outdoor survival skills like navigation and map reading. 
  • Students create and evaluate new games, understand the importance of clear rules, and demonstrate leadership and teamwork.
  • This programme aims to enhance physical skills, safety awareness, teamwork, and strategic thinking in sports and outdoor activities.

Perfecting performance

Term 2
Sports Science
- skeleton Function: Understanding the role of the skeleton and identifying basic bones.
- joints: Learning how joints work, including basic joint movements.
- muscles: Identifying basic muscles and understanding how muscles work in pairs to create movement.
- exercise responses: Exploring short-term and long-term responses to exercise.
- projectile motion: Understanding and incorporating projectile motion in sports.
- force summation: Learning about force summation and its impact on sporting performance.
- balance and stability: Identifying the main aspects of balance and stability.
- Newton's Laws: Differentiating Newton's laws and their application in sports.
- biomechanical principles: Explaining and applying biomechanical principles to various sporting scenarios.

Term 3
Survivor
- students will learn to distinguish between risks and hazards
- investigate and practice safety strategies, and understand how challenging situations can impact well-being.
- practical skills such as tying different knots, creating a stretcher for an injured team member, and developing key survival skills for outdoor scenarios.
- students will develop basic navigation and map reading skills
- identify and explain various risks posed by the environment, equipment, and people, and learn strategies to mitigate these risks.

Games making
- students will learn what factors are important in creating successful games
- demonstrate positive interpersonal skills, and use critical thinking to develop strategies and tactics.
- understand the importance of clear game rules, implement teaching in group settings, and evaluate the effectiveness of their games.





Term 4
Sports Education
- focuses on applying Hellison's Social Responsibility Model within a team setting to foster a sense of responsibility and cooperation.
- the importance of effective warm-ups and adhering to rules and guidelines to ensure safety and fairness in games.
- Students will play active roles as team members, demonstrating effective leadership skills and understanding various roles necessary for a successful sports team.
- Interpersonal skills are crucial for the successful functioning of a team, and students will learn how to improve these skills.

Students will have gained prior learning from participating in Year 9 Physical Education and Health.
