10 Te Reo Māori
Subject Description

Year 10 Te Reo Māori is designed to extend on the foundation skills and knowledge gained in Year 9 Te Reo Māori. Year 10 Te Reo Māori is a course designed to give students skills and knowledge in preparation for Te Reo Māori at NCEA Level 1.
Year 10 Te Reo Māori is an advantage as the course builds on what is learnt in Year 9. These students will already have knowledge of basic sentence structures and would have begun to build their vocabulary. However, students without previous experience in Te Reo Māori will be introduced to these for the first time and will still be able to achieve at this level.

Term 1
Ko au me tōku whānau
Intended Learning Outcomes for the term:
- Communicate about yourself and your family
- Demonstrate an understanding of common tikanga Māori
- Communicate about your home life and school life
- Describe and participate in a pōwhiri process
- Communicate about other familiar contexts you experience in your daily life
Term 2
Matariki
Intended Learning Outcomes for the term:
- Communicate about plans for the immediate future
- Communicate about past habits and routines
- Compare ways of celebrating Matariki
- Give information about school Matariki celebrations
- Learn and use karakia for kai
- Attend Matariki celebrations in the community
Term 3
Mahi-ā-rehia
Intended Learning Outcomes for the term:
- Communicate about past activities and events
- Communicate about present and past states, feelings and opinions
- Listen to te reo Māori sports commentary
- Read interviews with sportspeople
- Tell a story about a sports game
- Discuss feelings and opinions about a sports event
- Describe feelings and physical states
- Learn to use kīwaha to express feelings and opinions
Term 4
- Tikanga Marae & Hui Marae
- Intended Learning Outcomes for the term:
- Recite opening and closing karakia
- Introduce selves to classmates
- Using waiata in support of mihimihi
- Use correct pronunciation
- Request, offer, accept, and decline things

-Communicate about the quality, quantity and cost of things

Pathway
Te Reo Māori is useful across a range of careers. It will give you a distinct point of difference to other graduates. Many New Zealand employers want to hire people who have at least some knowledge of Te Reo Māori. There are also many Māori and iwi businesses that rely on fluent Te Reo Māori writers and speakers.
Assessment Information
Throughout each unit, the students will learn through the four key language modes; pānui (reading), tuhituhi (writing), kōrero (speaking) and whakarongo (listening). There are common tests at the completion of each unit of work throughout the year. There will also be some more formal assessments;1. An interaction (a conversation)
2. A piece of writing
3. A presentation
