Why study an International Language?

Studying an international language at the high school level will support you to thrive in a globalized world. Mastering a language  will provide students with the ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds, enhancing their ability to engage in international travel, work, and cultural exchanges. This linguistic skill opens doors to numerous opportunities, including studying abroad, participating in global business, and working in international organizations.

The study of an international language fosters cultural awareness and empathy, essential traits in today's interconnected society. By learning about the history, traditions, and perspectives of other cultures, students develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of global diversity. This cultural competence is invaluable, as it enables students to build meaningful relationships with people from different backgrounds and contribute positively to multicultural environments. Being proficient in an international language can provide a competitive edge in the job market, as employers increasingly value employees who can communicate effectively across cultures. By choosing to study an international language, students not only equip themselves with practical skills but also broaden their horizons and become more informed and empathetic global citizens.

In Year 9 all students will study a language of their choice. It is not possible to pick up a language in subsequent years if you have not started it in Year 9 (except in particular circumstances).

Te Reo Māori

Studying te reo Māori at the high school level is essential for preserving and revitalizing the indigenous language and culture of Aotearoa New Zealand. Learning te reo Māori fosters a deeper connection to the country’s rich heritage and enhances cultural understanding and respect. It provides students with insights into Māori perspectives, values, and traditions, promoting a more inclusive and cohesive society. Additionally, bilingualism or multilingualism, including proficiency in te reo Māori, offers cognitive benefits such as improved memory and problem-solving skills. By choosing to study te reo Māori, students contribute to the ongoing efforts to sustain an important cultural legacy, enrich their own identities, and strengthen the cultural fabric of their communities.
