Subject Description

  • This course builds on skills and language learning in Year 10 and prepares students for achieving NCEA L1 Chinese. 
  • On completion of this course, students will be able to communicate their thoughts, experiences and ideas in Chinese on areas such as school life, the place where they live, festivals and their own cultures. 
  • Students have the opportunity to participate in trips, speech competitions, and school cultural activities throughout the year.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Students will be learning to:
• Communicate information, ideas, and opinions about events or experiences that students have had with their families. Students will be encouraged to use different modes of
production, including written, spoken, or a combination of written and spoken Chinese (Mandarin).
• Interact about a typical weekend with their family with relevant examples.
• View, read, and listen to narratives or descriptions of different families in written and/or spoken Chinese (Mandarin).


Term 2
Students will be learning to:
• Plan a celebration for a friend/family member/class such as a birthday, shared lunch, or end of term celebration.
• Communicate about celebrations using spoken and written language. Students will be encouraged to use different modes of production.
• Present role plays about buying a present for someone, or dining in a Chinese restaurant for a special celebration, using interactive strategies.
• Interact with others to organise a celebration, using interactive strategies.

Term 3
Students will be learning to:
• Invite a friend to an event and direct them to the location using a combination of spoken and written language.
• Interact with others about planning a holiday or sharing holiday experiences, including giving directions, describing weather conditions, and details about events or places.
• Communicate about holiday experiences or a dream holiday using spoken and written language.

Term 4
Students will be learning to:
• Introduce your Chinese (Mandarin) class to others in written and spoken Chinese (Mandarin).
• Communicate about learning experiences in written and spoken Chinese (Mandarin).
• Interact with a partner or a visiting Chinese student about each other’s learning experience in different subjects.
• Build on interactive strategies to maintain a conversation.
• Explore Chinese characters in art forms.

Recommended Prior Learning

Previous study at junior level, or with HOD approval.
