Subject Description

Learning lea faka-Tonga will help learners to function more effectively in contexts where lea faka-Tonga is used. Learning the language and culture in a much broader sense allows students to interact more with other students, engage in more activities, which will lead to participating more effectively in school, family, church and community activities. Learning lea faka-Tonga at a higher level will enable learners to become more proficient in the languages they already use.

Term 1
Students will be learning about:
* Family by exploring links to their own heritage to deepen their sense of personal identity
* Their family
* Their family roles & responsibilities
* Family values
* Tongan values
* Talents or traditions that are unique to their family
Term 2
Students will be learning about:
* Family celebrations - Discuss a meaningful event or social gathering
* The language of making arts and crafts
* Their place, their space
* Land ownership and distribution
* Food and well-being
Term 3
Students will be learning about:
* The process of making an 'umu
* Coconut - The tree of life
* The ingredients and steps involved in the making of Tongan oil from coconut.
* Preparation for mock exams
Term 4
Revision for External exams.
Recommended Prior Learning
Pass one of the Year 10 assessments, or with HOD approval.
