L1 Physical Education

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Alex Eastwood, Bryce Griffiths.

  • Level 1 Physical Education focuses on movement strategies and application, effective strategies, Hauora, physical participation and kotahitanga. 
  • Students learn to use and demonstrate at least three movement strategies within the same activity setting. Emphasis is placed on the application and effectiveness of tactical strategies rather than just the technical execution of skills.
  • Students work as part of a team, applying strategies that promote unity, togetherness, and collective action, and reflect on their experiences.
  • Students explore how physical activities influence their holistic wellbeing (hauora), using specified health models, and reflect on these experiences over time.

Pre requisites: No pre reqs

Approximate credits: 20 credits 

Material fees: Students need to have a senior or junior physical education uniform

Term 1
Demonstrate understanding of the application of strategies in movement

Term 2
Apply movement strategies in an applied setting
- The Significant Learning reflected in this Achievement Standard includes:
- develop movement skills and strategies that are responsive to external cues.

Demonstrate understanding of the influence of personal movement experiences on hauora
- make meaning from how movement may influence hauora.
- manage self in challenging movement contexts.
- recognise that the body holds unique significance and tapu, and must be protected and nurtured through movement.

Term 3
Demonstrate understanding of influences on movement in Aotearoa New Zealand or the Pacific
- understand a range of biophysical principles.
- understand that sociocultural factors influence the moving body.
- understand te ao Māori influences on the moving body.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students will have developed basic prior knowledge for this subject by their participation in Junior Health and Physical Education.
