Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Lute Langi.

The overall theme of Level 2 Tongan has extended from ‘you’ alone in Level 1 Tongan, to ‘you and those around you’. That is, those with whom you collaborate and cooperate with in your day to day life. You will begin to engage in sustained interactions, produce extended texts and communicate your thoughts and interpretations in topics that are relevant to you and those around you. You will be assessed in listening, speaking, reading and writing standards.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Students will be learning about:

Recap – Revisiting the topics learnt in Junior School:
• Greetings, Introduction, Vocabulary, Formulaic Expressions

Spoken presentation:
* Tongan wedding
* Differences between weddings in Tonga and New Zealand
* Structure of spoken presentation – Intro/Body/Conclusion

Term 2
Students will be learning about:

1. Dreams: what you would/would not buy/where you would live and why /whether you would give some of your winnings to others/ how your win might affect relationships with family and friends, how your win might change you as a person/ how your win might influence your future.
2. Travels: schooling (including comparisons with the New Zealand system / transport (getting around by public transport/ food and meals/ opportunities for employment/ how people use their leisure time / things to do and see/ important cultural differences.
3. My place is best - compare and contrast.
4. The school ball.

Term 3
Students will be learning about:

* Different types of writings
1. Reviews: Short Tongan film - Structure/format, title/setting/characters/ summary/morals.
2. Share an opinion on an issue.
3. Creative story.

* Preparation for Mock exam

Term 4
Students will be:

* preparing for the External exam.
* going over past exam papers.
