Subject Description

- Level 3 Health explores important ethical dilemmas in healthcare and how they affect people's wellbeing.
- Students will learn about topics like euthanasia, immunisation, depression and more. The course looks at these issues from different angles, considering how they impact individuals and society.
- With a focus on New Zealand, students study health concerns like mental health, drug use, and disease prevalence, aiming to improve community wellbeing.
- Students will also evaluate different health practices, including Western medicine and alternative therapies, to understand their benefits and barriers.
- There is also an emphasis on examining global health issues like disease prevention and indigenous health, suggesting ways to improve health outcomes worldwide.
- Throughout the course, students will develop critical thinking skills and use evidence to support their ideas, preparing them to tackle health challenges at Level 3 Health and beyond.

Term 1
Analyse a contemporary ethical issue in relation to wellbeing
- A contemporary ethical issue is a health-related issue of current public concern and where there are differing perspectives held by individuals and groups of people. The nature of these different perspectives presents a dilemma for people and society.
- explaining the differing and opposing perspectives on the issue, and the reasons for these different perspectives.
- explaining the implications of current related health practices for the wellbeing of those directly affected by the issue, others associated with those people, and the wellbeing of people and society.
- examining the perspectives on the issue with insight into the reasons for these differing perspectives and their ethical foundations.
- linking the examination to underlying health concepts.
Term 2
Analyse a New Zealand health issue
- explaining the nature of the health issue in New Zealand and its implications for the wellbeing of people and society.
- explaining how the major determinants of health influence the health issue.
- recommending strategies to bring about more equitable outcomes in relation to the health issue.
Evaluate health practices currently used in New Zealand
- explaining the procedures involved in each practice, the underpinning philosophy or knowledge foundation of each practice in relation to Western scientific medicine (WSM), complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and/or traditional medicine (TM).
- explaining the advantages and disadvantages of each practice in relation to the concept of hauora.
- comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the selected practices and drawing conclusions supported by reasoned arguments.
Term 3
Analyse an international health issue
- explaining the nature of the international health issue and its implications on the wellbeing of people and society.
- explaining how the major determinants of health influence the issue.
- recommending strategies to bring about more equitable outcomes in relation to the health issue.
Recommended Prior Learning
Students are recommended to have taken Level 1 and Level 2 Health.
