The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA Level 1) is the qualification which is undertaken by students in Year 11. The qualification is a mixture of internal and external assessments. External assessments mainly take place in end of year examinations.

Students undergo diverse assessments including internal assignments, portfolios, tests, and exams, tailored to their educational progression.

All Year 11 students are enrolled in the following subjects:

  • ENGLISH
  • MATHEMATICS
  • SCIENCE (at least one science)
  • 3 OTHER SUBJECTS

Important Considerations:

  • Choose subjects based on personal enjoyment and future educational and career goals.
  • NCEA Level 2 subjects have specific minimum requirements that must be met in Year 11.
  • Refer to "Recommended Prior Learning" on each subject page for prerequisites.
  • Course availability depends on student numbers and staffing, confirmed at the start of the school year.

It's crucial to invest time and effort now in selecting subjects wisely, as class allocations are based on these choices. Changes to option subjects will not be considered after the current year, except in response to results or exceptional circumstances.

Ensure your option selection is completed by the deadline to secure your preferred course of study.

Planning Your Course - Suggestions:

  • Assess your interests, skills, and learning style to inform your subject choices.
  • Avoid specializing too early and maintain a broad range of subjects for future study flexibility.
  • Consider potential career paths and necessary subject requirements.
  • Stay informed about university course requirements and seek updated information from the Careers Department or directly from universities.
  • Seek advice from current Students, Whānau, Careers Advisors, Kaitiaki Teachers, Subject Teachers, Deans and others to make informed decisions.

Choosing your subjects wisely now will lay a solid foundation for your future educational and career aspirations.
